Sarah's Outlander Story

In the summer of 2019, I heard a friend of mine discussing a book series that had been made into a show and soon to be released on Netflix. I'm not a reader to begin with and as soon as I heard the words “time travel”, I discounted it all together. I told her I wasn’t into Sci-fi.  However, a few weeks later, “Outlander” popped on my screen when I opened Netflix. I thought “this must be the show my friend was talking about. I’ll see what it’s like but I probably won’t like it.”

I had zero idea about what happens. I knew time travel was involved but that was it. And for that I am forever thankful! To experience this story telling as it was intended, free of spoilers! I joke that I’d sell a kidney to experience it all again for the first time.

I’ll admit, the stone circle and ghost scenes threw me off. I wasn’t sure if I would be into it. I am not a fan of horror or ghost movies. I sort of paid attention. Then all of a sudden, Claire touched the stone.

The second I heard the bagpipes, my heart raced. I was immersed. How in the world was she getting out of this?? I felt like I was there! Ok, Diana Gabaldon. Now I’m invested.

I kept thinking through the first half of season one, Claire HAS to get back to Frank! How is she going to pull this off? And who is this Jamie McTavish who’s kind of always around? I found him a tad annoying. Like what’s his deal? Can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I didn’t even really find Jamie attractive. I saw him as a bit of a nuisance.

During the wedding episode, it hit me. Like a ton of bricks. “You have my name, my clan, my family. And if necessary, the protection of my body as well”. That’s when I realized. He loves Claire. I always say it hit me just as it hit Claire. Jamie loved her! Like REALLY LOVED HER.

*SWITCH FLIPS* JAMIE IS HOT AF. So hot I don’t know what to do with myself.

I had to take deep breaths because I was so focused on her getting to Frank and then this plot twist is dawning on me. I remember actually thinking “Oh sh**. Now what?”

I stayed up until 4 am on nights that I had to go to work the next day because I had to find out what happens next. I became enthralled in the story! Claire’s voiceovers, actions and intelligence became an inspiration to me. I saw myself in her, but I wanted to be even more like her! To this day I find myself trying to process and think about situations through a “Claire lens”. What would Claire Fraser do?

The rest is history. I’ve enjoyed every twist and turn in the series and when I have some more time on my hands, plan to read the books! I love following the cast on social media and their antics keep me sane as we await the end of Droughtlander.

Hands down, the best part of my outlander story is the friendships that have come out of it. My sister and I bonded more than ever over the show and decided to book a flight to NYC for comic con in 2019. We met up with some amazing friends who are called the “Sassenach Squad”. We have kept in touch pretty much daily. Not only do we obsess over all things outlander, but are there for each other through some tough times. I’m forever grateful for it!
